Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS)
Co-located at the IOC Perth Programme Office, the Secretariat of the ICG/IOTWS works closely with regional, national and international organizations to establish the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System.
Tony Elliott joined UNESCO IOC as Head of Secretariat ICG/IOTWS in July 2006. Tony has 30 years experience in research and commercial oceanography. He graduated from the University of Ulster in 1977 with a degree in Environmental Science and obtained a Master of Science in Marine Earth Science from University College London in 1978. During his career Tony has gained broad experience in the marine sciences, including marine geophysics, physical oceanography, numerical modelling, environmental studies, coastal zone management, and real time meteorological and oceanographic monitoring systems. After moving to the commercial sector he specialised in the project management of large, multi-disciplinary studies for coastal and offshore engineering developments and prior to joining UNESCO IOC, he concentrated on business development and consultancy relating to the development of physical oceanographic and meteorological criteria for offshore developments. In his current role, Tony coordinates the provision of secretariat support for the ICG/IOTWS, which involves a high degree of liaison with Member States and Working Groups on a wide range of technical and administrative issues.
