The aim of the Pacific Islands Global Ocean Observing System (PI-GOOS) is to assist sustainable development in Pacific Island nations by facilitating the establishment and implementation of coastal and open ocean observing programs, and helping to improve uptake and use of the data, information and products being generated. BackgroundThe PI-GOOS was established in 1998, and is currently one of 12 GOOS Regional Alliances (GRA) operational worldwide. In 2004 a full-time coordinator of PI-GOOS was appointed as a joint initiative between the Pacific Islands' Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) and the IOC Perth Office. Since 2010, PI-GOOS is coordinated from the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) offices in Apia, Samoa and serves all 21 Pacific Island SPREP Member Countries (see Member Country Map). The Program is sponsored by the UNESCO's IOC, US NOAA and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. GovernanceThe PIGOOS Secretariat is currently located at the South Pacific Regional Environmental Program (SPREP) in Samoa. Documents such as the PI-GOOS work plan, strategy, and annual report can be downloaded from the PI GOOS Website Documents page.
