The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Perth Programme Office (PPO) is a regional focal point for the IOC and promotes international cooperation, coordinates and facilitates the development and implementation of oceanographic science programmes, and supports capacity-building initiatives across the full spectrum of the IOC’s programmes in the southern hemisphere region. The Office has a particular focus on supporting ocean observations and services through the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and ocean sciences as a Joint Project Office (JPO) overseeing the Second International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE-2).
The IOC PPO is co-sponsored by the UNESCO IOC, the Australian Government’s Bureau of Meteorology and the Western Australian State Government through the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
